Route story

Magna Graecia, ceramics & the Ionian

Begin between Taranto’s two seas, move inland through Grottaglie’s ceramics and Primitivo country, then turn south to the low Ionian coastline.

The route links archaeology, craft traditions and inland towns before changing character at Campomarino, where the second half becomes a sea-facing ride back toward Taranto.

Navigation format

Use the named roads as the reference line. The inland shaping around San Marzano–Manduria and selected coastal connectors remain final field checks.

Suggested rhythm

A full riding day

The loop is designed to leave time for the places, not just the kilometres. Stop durations remain flexible.

01TarantoStart — Taranto, the City of the Two Seas and the archaeological anchor of the route.
02GrottaglieGrottaglie — ceramics district, workshops and ravine-edge townscape.
03San Marzano di San GiuseppeSan Marzano di San Giuseppe — short Arbëreshë cultural stop.
04ManduriaManduria — Messapian archaeology and Primitivo country.
05MaruggioMaruggio — compact historic village before the sea.
06Campomarino di MaruggioCampomarino — harbour, dunes and the first full Ionian view.
07PulsanoPulsano — coastal-riding hinge on the return west.
08LeporanoLeporano — final stop near Saturo before Taranto.

Practical stops

Park the bike. Walk the old towns.

Historic centres are treated as walking stops. Follow current signs and use signed parking on the outer approaches.

01

Taranto

Start — Taranto, the City of the Two Seas and the archaeological anchor of the route.

Parking

Start outside the old-town restricted streets and use signed public parking on the Borgo / waterfront approaches.

ZTL

Central access restrictions and pedestrian areas can change by time and event. Follow live signs rather than routing directly into Città Vecchia.

Food

A good start for coffee; save the main food stop for Manduria, Maruggio or the coast.

See

Ponte Girevole, Castello Aragonese and the Mar Piccolo / Mar Grande relationship define the start.

Local tip

Treat Taranto as a cultural anchor: park once and walk the waterfront/old-town section.

02

Grottaglie

Grottaglie — ceramics district, workshops and ravine-edge townscape.

Parking

Use signed parking outside the Quartiere delle Ceramiche and enter the workshop streets on foot.

ZTL

The historic centre contains narrow streets and access controls; do not follow sat-nav shortcuts into the ceramics quarter.

Food

Ideal for coffee and a short bakery stop while visiting the ceramics workshops.

See

The ceramics quarter and ravine-edge townscape are the visual focus.

Local tip

Allow 35–50 minutes: enough to walk the district without turning the ride into a museum day.

03

San Marzano di San Giuseppe

San Marzano di San Giuseppe — short Arbëreshë cultural stop.

Parking

A brief centre-perimeter stop is enough.

Food

Keep this as a coffee or water stop unless you want to explore the local Arbëreshë food tradition.

Local tip

This is intentionally a texture stop: 15–25 minutes is enough.

04

Manduria

Manduria — Messapian archaeology and Primitivo country.

Parking

Park outside the tight central streets and approach the historic centre and archaeological areas on foot.

ZTL

Use current local signs around the historic core; do not assume unrestricted motorcycle access.

Food

Strong lunch candidate: local cuisine and Primitivo-related food culture make this a natural long stop.

See

The interest is archaeological and urban rather than panoramic.

Local tip

If you choose only one long inland stop, make it Manduria.

05

Maruggio

Maruggio — compact historic village before the sea.

Parking

Leave the bike outside the narrow historic core and walk in.

Food

Good alternative to Manduria for a lighter lunch or gelato stop.

Local tip

Use Maruggio as the transition from cultural inland riding to the coastal half of the loop.

06

Campomarino di Maruggio

Campomarino — harbour, dunes and the first full Ionian view.

Parking

Use signed seasonal parking and expect beach traffic in July and August.

See

The harbour and low Ionian coastline create the route’s first true sea panorama.

Local tip

Outside midsummer this is one of the easiest places to slow down for 20–30 minutes.

07

Pulsano

Pulsano — coastal-riding hinge on the return west.

Parking

Choose parking away from beach access bottlenecks in high season.

Food

Useful late-afternoon coffee or gelato stop.

Local tip

In summer, keep an eye on traffic around the marina approaches.

08

Leporano

Leporano — final stop near Saturo before Taranto.

Parking

A short stop is enough unless you detour toward the archaeological/coastal area of Saturo.

See

The Saturo coast is the scenic payoff if time allows.

Local tip

Keep enough daylight for the final approach to Taranto and the waterfront.

Fuel strategy

Start full. Keep it simple.

Start full in Taranto. Manduria is the most practical mid-loop backup before the coastal half.

ZTL rule

Live signs always win.

Treat Taranto, Grottaglie, Manduria and Maruggio historic cores as walk-in stops. Current signs always override the route notes.

Season

Ride for the conditions.

Spring and early autumn are best. In July–August the Ionian coast can be slow and crowded, especially from Campomarino toward Pulsano.

Optional variants

Ride like a local

Five things worth knowing

01

Ride clockwise: Taranto and ceramics first, sea second.

02

Grottaglie and Manduria deserve real stops.

03

San Marzano is intentionally brief.

04

Do not plan August coastal averages like normal provincial roads.

05

No off-road section is planned.

Optional variants

Change the day, not the route

Variant 01

Short culture loop: Taranto → Grottaglie → San Marzano → Manduria → Taranto.

Variant 02

Longer Ionian extension toward Torre Ovo remains outside the primary GPX until field-tested.
