March to May: the countryside wakes up
Spring is one of the easiest periods to recommend for a motorcycle trip in Puglia. The landscape is greener than the summer postcard version, inland temperatures are generally comfortable and the main coastal resorts have not yet reached peak traffic. March can still be unstable, especially on longer days or at higher points in the Gargano and Murge, so waterproof layers and flexible plans matter. By April and May, longer daylight makes full-day loops increasingly easy to manage.
This is an excellent season for Valle d’Itria, the Murge and cultural routes where walking through historic centres is part of the day. The motorcycle is less exposed to extreme heat and a lunch stop does not need to become an escape from the sun.
June to August: start early and respect the coast
June often offers a useful compromise: summer light and sea conditions without the intensity of the main August holiday period. As July advances, heat becomes a more important planning factor and the famous coastal corridors attract more local and visitor traffic. August can still produce memorable riding, but it rewards discipline. Leave early, keep water accessible, avoid planning normal average speeds through beach areas and do not make the busiest tourist town the centre of your day.
The interior can be a better choice during peak coastal pressure, but midday heat remains real. A long shaded lunch, a shorter route or a split day with early and late riding often works better than forcing a conventional all-day schedule.
September to November: the second season
For many riders, September and October are the strongest months. The sea and landscape still feel Mediterranean, daylight remains useful and traffic around the major beach destinations generally relaxes after the main holiday period. Early autumn is particularly good for mixed routes that combine coastal and inland riding.
November can still deliver excellent days, especially in southern and lowland Puglia, but it requires more flexibility. Daylight is shorter, rain systems can make rural lanes dirty and the temperature gap between morning and afternoon becomes more noticeable. The reward is a quieter version of the region.
December to February: possible, but not the default
Winter riding in Puglia should not be advertised as guaranteed sunshine. There are mild clear days, but wind, rain and short daylight can quickly reduce the value of a long self-guided loop. Some inland and elevated areas also feel much colder than coastal photographs suggest.
The practical PMR recommendation is therefore seasonal rather than absolute: March–June and September–November are the broad sweet spots, with April–May and late September–October especially attractive for first-time visitors. Summer is best approached with early starts and realistic traffic expectations. Winter can work for local or flexible riders who can choose the day rather than lock the ride into a fixed holiday schedule.
